Home Sweet Home Bar

When I first visited New York City nearly three years ago, I couch-surfed with a complete stranger (who would become a close friend).  It was on that first night in the city that I found myself at a bar, sitting next to a coyote. Given my state of mind – it may as well have been alive.Home Sweet Home holds a special place in my heart. It's the type of place you probably want to go to at 2 AM, after visiting a few other local waterholes on a weekend, but as my friend described it to me – “this place is largely unchanged since the 1970s.”The dozen or so bartenders I've interacted with have all been eccentric and pleasurable, and the drinks were on par. With it's linear shape, the place can get a bit crowded and hard to maneuver through (but don't all NYC bars?). Though, the dance floor in the back is contoured with couches for those of you who are finding it hard to stay upright.Overall, the luster of Home Sweet Home has slightly worn off as I've edged into my late 20s, but it's still a special spot with an atmosphere that is unique all its own. Now that I live in the city, it's become almost a bit of an inside joke. If your night ends up at Home Sweet Home – it's been one of “those” nights. And sometimes that's not a bad thing.

At 1AM on a Thursday night (technically Friday morning), my friend Katie M. coaxed me into visiting one last bar to round out a long weeknight of New York revelry while I was in town. You New Yorkers–so much goddamn stamina.Home Sweet Home was popping when we dropped in, the dance floor full of bodies. The place was on the divey side, in what was essentially a basement. It felt kind of stuffy, but in a lively way, and we were able to find seating at the edge of the dance floor.I had a whiskey ginger, my drink of the night, and it was the same as the whiskey gingers I'd had at the last two bars. Reliably good, with a decent amount of whiskey. The bartender worked quickly, a definite positive.I doubt I'll come back here–it's just one of many random bars I've visited in New York and other cities–but I had a good time, considering my level of exhaustion. If you need a place to dance in the LES late into the school night, Home Sweet Home is worth checking out.

Profile A former sign-making shop is now a bar with no sign. Add to the irony: Aside from a couple of grandma’s couches, there isn’t much to make this subterranean lair—also once a bean-sprout factory—feel like home sweet home. At best, aficionados of taxidermy and lovers of knickknacks will feel like they’ve paradoxically climbed down a stairway to heaven. The wooden bar’s illuminated diorama-like display cases show off eBay detritus like a de-necked electric guitar, dental casts, and the disembodied horse-head of a hitching post. As far as real animals go, a stuffed rabbit, an eagle, and a beaver frolic around a tree branch repurposed as a lamp stand. That sort of exoticism doesn’t carry over to the beer selection or to the D.J.’s jams (which run the gamut from Skynyrd to the Smiths). — Daniel Maurer

Home Sweet Home Bar

Came here on a Saturday night between 9 and midnight. Plenty of standing room at 9 but definitely still plenty of people there to make it seem far from dead. The place is downstairs and lined with taxidermy pieces giving it a fun 'authentic' yet cheesy feel. That theme was further helped or confused by a huge disco ball. The bar was relatively accessible and the drinks were good and reasonable for city standards. Later, it became pretty crowded, but not necessarily packed. One person in our group arrived after 10:30 and was upset to have to pay a $5 cover— annoying, yet not altogether completely unreasonable, although it would be a complete deal breaker for some since there are plenty of bars nearby with no cover. What I liked about the bar is that although it was more of a bar then a club, there was EXCELLENT music playing and dancing was welcome, yet not required. I would definitely come back with the right crowd!
